Research Overview

Nutrient Recovery & Wastewater Treatment

Chemical compounds present in wastewater streams have a high potential to be recycle and reuse as a nutrient source for crops. The recovery of these nutrients (N, P, Mg, etc.) as fertilisers is a profitable way to achieve global food security in a world where rock phosphate fertilisers can be obtained from few countries and their depletion in less than one century is inevitable.

Chemical Process System Engineering

The skill of predicting diverse process scenarios can allow us to make better and faster decisions and improve process operatiional conditions. To assess process conditions we can perform computational simulations, based on mathematical models of the system. The application of  chemical engineering topics, such as reactor engineering, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and mass transfer into friendly simulation software packages can increase the engineer’s confindence in daily challenges.

Food Process Engineering

New food products and implementation of food conservation technologies became a necessity in a globalised world where food is scarce. High nutritios and innocuous processed foods can be obtained with adequate process design, good manufacturing practices and equipment design. Moreover, competitive markets require food process innovations and technology optimisation.
